The effect of consumer lockdown on the relationship between environmental beliefs and pro-environmental behaviors

Abstract This study investigates the disruptive effect of COVID-19 lockdown on relationship between environmental beliefs and pro-environmental behaviors. We used a survey conducted in four major cities Colombia before arrived December 2019 then repeated it October 2020, after most restrictions mobility economic activity had been lifted. The captured ecocentric anthropocentric using New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) Pro Environmental Behaviors (PEBS) 18 questions about energy water savings, recycling, sustainable purchasing. In 2020 survey, we included measure severity individual’s experience disruption, including economic, family, health-related aspects. Controlling for demographic variables, analyzed (1) descriptive changes NEP PEBS, (2) moderating disruption (3) direct (4) PEBS 2020. found that caused by crisis decreased slightly increased beliefs. also modified effects thereby ameliorating capacity to activate PEBS. moderated these effects. discuss implications our results theory behaviors offer recommendations reverse potential negative promotion consumption.
